For three years now, Blizzard has been reviving the nostalgia of its most veteran players with the release of WoW Classic and it's subsequent The Burning Crusade Classic. However, it was not until recently that they announced WoW Wrath of the Lich King Classic, also known as WoW Wotlk Classic, which is considered the best expansion of the game due to numerous elements such as the story of Arthas Menethil, the release of Ulduar and new mechanics.
As we see the arrival of this expansion to the classic version in the coming months, it's well worth making a list of why people loved it so much at the time and are looking forward to playing it again. There are many reasons, but in this article, we are going to list about ten.
Why Wrath of the Lich King Was the Best World of Warcraft Expansion
1 – The construction of a whole story
This is probably the biggest reason even for players who didn't pay much attention to the story or the quests. The reason for this had been brewing for several years with the release of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002). From this moment we were introduced to the most famous antagonist of the entire franchise, Arthas Menethil, who initially began as a noble paladin devoted to the holy light.
Throughout all the campaigns of Warcraft III, we closely follow the name of Arthas. We learned of his convictions, his obsessions, his descent into madness, and ultimately the sacrifice of his entire being to become a ruthless, bloodthirsty villain. We saw this when he has crowned the Lich King after a great battle against Illidan Stormrage.
When World of Warcraft came out, everyone expected a continuation of the story. The Scourge was seen everywhere and fought in Naxxramas, but there was no news about Arthas. Then came The Burning Crusade with Illidan, so it was a matter of time to see it. The Wrath of the Lich King announcement was epic and gave the public exactly what they wanted. Think of fighting Arthas? Everything required a wait of at least six years.
But it was not enough just to introduce the Lich King. The whole story around him and what the new continent of Northrend had to offer was very well presented. Whether through quests in which The Scourge was a constant danger or in dungeons like The Stratholme Massacre that recreated the villain's past, everything created an environment to feel fear and even respect for the one who was the king of the non-dead.
When we finally saw him go down, it was an incredible sight. For the first time, we saw him as weak and paying the price for so much suffering he caused. He agonized looking into the eyes of the soul of his father Terenas Menethil telling him that his reign had come to an end. Indeed: a story of several years had a well-deserved ending that was not easy to obtain.
For many, World of Warcraft ended with the death of the Lich King.
2 – Very innovative mechanics
Some consider WoW Wotlk to be the best expansion for the implementation of mechanics such as "vehicle" handling.
For the first time in WoW, mechanics began to be seen which attracted a lot of attention from the players. One of them was the implementation of "vehicles", which could be mounts or real vehicles that gave special combat abilities and even had their own life bars. This made it possible to fight dragons in the Oculus dungeon and even fight siege tanks in Ulduar, the raid that came with patch 3.1. from Wrath of the Lich King and one of the most memorable of the expansion.
Arthas's father, Terenas Menethil, tries to resurrect you in the fight against his son in Wrath of the Lich King.
As if that weren't enough, we also saw an NPC like Terenas Menethil resurrecting an entire gang, the Lich King chasing players through an entire dungeon, and even the use of siege weapons on battlefields like Beach of the Ancients and Winter Conquest.
3 – Memorable dungeons and raids
Ulduar not only stood out for using the siege tanks in the first boss, but it brought a lot of novelty. In this one we ended up knocking down a dragon, breaking a boss for parts and even taking care of our sanity so as not to fall into Yogg-Saron's control. However, the newest thing was the implementation of the hard mode: if you wanted, you could press a button or do something specific to make the boss more difficult and by defeating it you could get better loot. Unfortunately, this was just the intro for Heroic mode, so we didn't see much more of this "Hardmode" theme, with a few exceptions.
